When I read its definition and poked around the website dedicated to its movement, I felt like I had found kindred spirits. Like a long-lost tribe member wandering in the midst of strangers and made to feel like an outcast, I had finally stumbled upon a tribe that would take me in. It’s been a little long in coming (12 years in fact), as it was in the year 2000 that writer, coach and marketing consultant Sasha Cagen coined this term. She expounds more on her original essay.
But if you have no time to read her short essay, here’s an excerpt:

“We are the puzzle pieces who seldom fit with other puzzle pieces. Romantics, idealists, eccentrics, we inhabit singledom as our natural resting state. In a world where proms and marriage define the social order, we are, by force of our personalities and inner strength, rebels.
For the quirkyalone, there is no patience for dating just for the sake of not being alone. We want a miracle. Out of millions, we have to find the one who will understand.
Better to be untethered and open to possibility: living for the exhilaration of meeting someone new, of not knowing what the night will bring. We quirkyalones seek momentous meetings.”

But to be sure I belonged – I mean one can’t just claim allegiance so easily right? – I took the quirkyalone quiz to determine if I was in their camp. My quiz result as follows:

How quirkyalone are you?
Your score was 98. Very quirkyalone:
Relatives may give you quizzical looks, and so may friends, but you know in your heart of hearts that you are following your inner voice. Though you may not be romancing a single person, you are romancing the world. Celebrate your freedom on National Quirkyalone Day, February 14th!

“Romancing the world”…ok, I like the sound of that. And it’s true – I’ve always followed my inner voice, often following the heart rather than the head, for better or for worse. Perhaps I should start a quirkyalone meetup group in Hong Kong. Anyway, to other quirkyalones out there, I hope we’ll meet somewhere, someday, somehow. I’m sure we’ll have a blast together. 🙂

quirkyalone: n. a person who enjoys being single (or spending time alone) and so prefers to wait for the right person to come along rather than dating indiscriminately; relishing equal doses of friendship and solitude; attracted to freedom and possibility. … Continue reading →

[8

post-1444","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-musings-mullings
["GET
