The Singapore government is pulling all stops to get singles to marry and procreate. Apart from having the SDU (Social Development Unit or Single, Desperate & Ugly) and SDS (Social Development Service), there is now the Romancing Singapore <\/a>year-long festival. Yes, it’s another case of the government playing nanny to the people. This time they’ve taken it a step further to become matchmaker.
\nBut first, one gripe about the SDU and SDS. The SDU is meant for people who are university graduates while the SDS is meant for those who aren’t. I don’t understand why this segregation has to exist. It’s so discriminatory and totally defeats the notion of getting out there and knowing more people.
\nRecently, there has been much talk AGAIN about ways to get Singaporeans to make babies. There has been so much commentary about baby bonuses usually in the form of tax incentives, and then there are people from different camps writing in to the forum. The married-with-children folks proclaiming the joys of parenthood, the DINKs (double-income-no-kids) lamenting about the stress of bringing up children in Singapore and the singles who just want to be left alone without having to justify their single status to anyone.
\nPersonally, I’m sick of all these baby talk. But love is in the air this week (with Valentine’s Day and all), especially so for me today. Well, not really for me ME, but rather a friend from uni is having her wedding dinner tonight and I’ll be helping out at the reception. A couple of friends and I will also be singing a song for the bridal couple. I hope I don’t get stage fright! Yaks!
\nI’ve already gone for a 5km run as I’m working up my appetite for the feast tonight! hahaha! But yes, it’s going to be a night to celebrate the love between two wonderful people!
