As I type this blog entry on my iPhone, I’m taking a slow ride to Wanchai and enjoying the night scene. Sure the trams are slow compared to the trains and buses, but I love this old-school mode of transport. I also like how it’s affectionately known as ‘ding ding’ (叮叮) by the locals because the bell is to the tram as a horn is to a car. Cute. Did I also mention it’s one of the cheapest forms of public transport at HKD 2.3 per ride?

I usually like to sit on the upper deck as I get to see more. And as the trams are not air conditioned, I feel not as cut off from what’s going on in the street compared to being stuck underground in a train or behind a glass window in a bus. Having the night breeze blow gently in my face is so nice after being stuck in the office for the whole day. Ok, I shall just forget about the fact that the air outside is polluted and filled with exhaust fumes from the other vehicles on the roads.

Now excuse me while I enjoy my slow tram ride and continue my people-watching…

When I am not in a rush I always like taking the trams on Hong Kong island.
