From Prague I flew back to Munich where I stayed for a night before flying off to Sarajevo the next morning. I arrived in Munich at about 2pm and this time I actually stepped out of the airport terminal and instead of transitting through it. Although I have to say I really like the airport for its shops, eateries, facilities (showers, lounge chairs, working desks, and wifi) and ample seating for waiting passengers.<\/span><\/p>\n

After clearing customs I made my way to the S-bahn for a ride into the Hauptbahnhof (the central train station in the city centre). The hotel I had booked for the night was a five-minute walk from the Hauptbahnhof. The moment I checked in I dumped my bags and promptly made my way to the Marienplatz to see the Glockenspiel and Frauenkirche. For how could one visit Munich and not go to the Marienplatz?<\/span><\/p>\n

Walking around the Marienplatz brought back a flood of memories. I was here in this lovely city in 2006 and 2007 (twice in the latter year), and had seen quite a lot of the city and the Bavarian region. I went to the Oktoberfest and saw the beautiful Christmas markets in the cold of December, visited Neuschwanstein the palace that was the inspiration for Cinderella’s castle in Disneyland, and skipped over to neighbouring Bavarian cities such as Nuremberg and Wurzburg.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Marienplatz during the evening of 16 September 2016 was a busy one full of tourists who had all descended on the city for the Oktoberfest which was to begin on the day after. I was the odd tourist who would fly out on the first day of the renowned beer festival. There were too many tourists for my liking and I made my way into Frauenkirche, the famous onion-domed cathedral that characterises Munich’s skyline, for a quiet moment.<\/p>\n

The peace and quiet in Frauenkirche was a welcome respite from the crowds. I sat on one of the pews and reflected on my experience with the city and the years that have passed since I was last there. Thinking back on the younger woman I was, the dreams I had, some fulfilled some lost, made me pensive. People who had passed through my life at that time but no longer feature in my life anymore fleeted through my mind. In the serenity of the cathedral, emotion came over me and I shed a few tears for those unfulfilled dreams and lost connections. <\/span><\/p>\n

Nevertheless my time in Europe many years ago taught me life skills and gave me a deeper understanding of my own strengths and abilities. Munich will always be special in its own way to me, but as far as favourite cities go, it will still rank behind Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney and London! <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
