I’ve also been doing some introspection on my time spent in Hong Kong.

I think I can truly say that I have fully embraced this city as I’ve been to more places in Hong Kong compared to the average resident or local. I made it a point to explore Kowloon and the New Territories, unlike many foreigners who never stepped out of Hong Kong island. I lived in a suburb where there were few expats. I spoke Cantonese to my colleagues and friends who were locals. And I know that helped me to build a rapport with them that wouldn’t have been possible had I not spoken Cantonese.

My Cantonese and Mandarin have also improved immensely in the time I have been in Hong Kong. I can read and write both traditional and simplified Chinese with ease. I can also partake in a conversation purely in Cantonese and Mandarin. I have also realised Hong Kongers are more traditional in that they would make a point to celebrate the Winter Solstice, Dragonboat Festival, Qing Ming, Chong Yang and the Mid Autumn Festival by having a reunion dinner with their families. Singaporean Chinese tend to do it only for Chinese New Year. I like that the Hong Kongers still observe such traditions.

Apart from advancing in my career, I got myself a master’s degree through studying part-time for 2.5 years. It was tough juggling work and study but I did it. I think it’s something I can be proud of.

View of Tai Long Wan along stage 2 of the MacLehose trail in Sai Kung

Today I say goodbye to the city that has been my home for the past 7 years. There were ups and downs but I think overall there were more of the former than latter. In this city, I’ve learnt how to survive and live on my own. It was here that I discovered hiking and the joys of being in the mountains.

There is this conflict of feelings – on one level I’m ready to leave yet it’s still emotional to walk away from the home and connections of the past 7 years.

It’s been a blast and I leave this city with many fond memories of my time spent here. Thank you, Hong Kong!

My last few days in Hong Kong have been spent catching up with friends over hikes and having farewell drinks with my colleagues.
