\nThe bright wire rolls like a porpoise
\nin and out of the calm blue sea
\nof the cover, or perhaps like a sleeper
\ntwisting in and out of his dreams,
\nfor it could hold a record of dreams
\nif you wanted to buy it for that
\nthough it seems to be meant for
\nmore serious work, with its
\ncollege-ruled lines and its cover
\nthat states in emphatic white letters,
\n5 SUBJECT NOTEBOOK. It seems
\na part of growing old is no longer
\nto have five subjects, each
\ndemanding an equal share of attention,
\nset apart by brown cardboard dividers,
\nbut instead to stand in a drugstore
\nand hang on to one subject
\na little too long, like this notebook
\nyou weigh in your hands, passing
\nyour fingers over its surfaces
\nas if it were some kind of wonder.
