I chose it because I had read about its good Cantonese fare and because my dad only likes to eat Cantonese food. It is quite unfathomable how I came to acquire a liking for various kinds of cuisine when I was hardly taken to eat anything else but Chinese during the growing years (still the case actually).
Anyways, we went to the branch at Thomson Plaza instead of the original one at Novena, because it was nearer to home. The branch at Thomson Plaza occupies the space formerly occupied by the restaurant called Thomson Kelong. My family used to frequent the latter for dimsum when I was a kid.

The peach-coloured interiors, obviously a hark back to the restaurant’s name, was pleasant and soothing. The furniture and cutlery were simple and there was nothing garish or kitsch about the place–something which many Chinese restaurants are guilty of!

The stir-fried chicken with pieces of tofu and salted fish was delicious too. You could tell there was a lot of wok hei during the frying from the heat when it was served and also the way it tasted.

The tenderloin beef topped with a slightly sweet sauce was extremely tender, and was a joy to eat. It’s a pretty huge piece and is ordered on a per piece basis. One piece per person is more than enough unless you’re out to eat an entire cow.

This was like a fusion of Chinese and Japanese cuisine. The prawns were deep-fried and then coated with some Japanese mayonnaise that was also infused with wasabi. It was then topped with some fish roe for a bit of extra crunch. The taste was quite unique and at first bite, I didn’t quite like it as I felt the prawns were just a tad too try. But on my second prawn, I seemed to think a little better about it as I quite liked the wasabi coating, which wasn’t too strong, but still added a nice little punch.

As with tradition when it comes to birthdays, it is customary to eat noodles as it’s supposed to represent longevity. We love Yeefu Noodles so we ordered the Seafood Yeefu Noodles. This was light and wasn’t too oily, which was good.
Also known for their excellent service, I’d have to say Peach Garden didn’t disappoint on this account. The staff were attentive and meticulous in the changing of plates and were prompt on refilling our tea. The only gripe was that the rice and tea wasn’t piping hot. Also, the rice seemed somewhat dry and not fluffly and steaming hot as good rice should be.
We mentioned this to the owner who came round to our table for a short chat (good PR I must say) when I was signing for the bill. She was a very pleasant lady and was very receptive to our comments. It was an altogether pleasant and good dining experience.
Note: You can get a 20% discount if you pay with a Citibank credit card.
