I was introduced to Snow King 雪王冰淇淋 by Piggy who said this was an ice cream place I HAD to try. As it was in the height of summer, I was more than happy to head there.

Snow King prides itself on having 73 different ice cream flavours, some of which are savoury! There are flavours made from various types of tea, alcohol and fruits among the more normal flavours like chocolate and vanilla.

Out of curiosity, we tried four savoury flavours – wasabi 芥末, pork floss 肉鬆, sesame chicken 麻油雞 and pork knuckle 豬腳. There were tiny bits of pork floss, sesame chicken and pork knuckle in those ice creams. As you can probably tell from the four half-eaten cups, we couldn’t quite stomach all of it as it was just really weird!!! My conclusion? Ice cream is still best eaten sweet.

After the savoury ones, we decided to go for the more normal sweet flavours – yam 芋頭, osmanthus with chrysanthemum 桂花菊, guiyuan 桂圓 (aka longan), and egg custard. I liked the osmanthus with chrysanthemum best with its subtle taste of both flower teas.
While the savoury flavours are definitely an acquired taste, they’re still worth a try if you haven’t tried anything like it. At least you can say you’ve eaten it before! But whatever the case, you’ll definitely be able to find something to your liking with Snow King’s large selection.
