Went to 合益蜂場 in the first week of February while on a hike around Tai Po and Fanling, which are in the northeast part of the New Territories. There is no direct public transport to this humble hakka eatery and it is a place for tired hikers to grab a bite/drink. To get there, you can either hike there from Wu Kau Tang (烏蛟騰) where there are signs directing you to Sam A Tsuen (三椏村), which is where 合益蜂場 is located. You can take a taxi to Wu Kau Tang from Tai Po Market mtr station.

Look out for this sign when you are in Wu Kau Tang

合益蜂場 from afar

They make their own honey from bees kept in this styrofoam boxes

It’s pretty much like a run-down shack but I think therein lies its charm

Little mandarin oranges picked from a tree in their garden were placed on the tables for patrons to eat for free. And the menu is seen on the top right – no English translation available I’m afraid!

The fried noodles were tasty and was a good way to fuel the stomach

Hakka braised pork with wood fungus, dried tofu, celery and spring onions. The dish was pretty oily but I thought it tasted good. OK, it doesn’t look pretty, but it’s hearty, down-to-earth fare.

Yam and pumpkin cooked in coconut milk – very Southeast Asian for some reason!

Cholesterol alert – oysters fried in egg

Silky, smooth beancurd for dessert

The restaurant’s own chilli plant
This is no gourmet restaurant, but I like it for its rustic setting and hearty, Hakka fare. That it lies along a hiking route makes a hike there all the more enjoyable.
