One of the rare delights in this age of computers and email, is when one receives snail mail. I don’t mean bills, junk mail and useless pamphlets. I mean an actual card, postcard or letter from a friend.
Today I received a postcard and a letter from May, my close friend who’s studying in Germany at the moment. There’s always a thrill in receiving snail mail. I take a perverse delight in sliting the letter open with a letter opener. Haha. Then I will settle myself in a nice corner where I can savour the contents of the letter.
Thanks May! It was such a rare treat and it really made my day!
I think it’s not only the receiver who’s happy. The sender is also happy to know he/she has brought some joy to the other person’s day. I really enjoy writing and I also take a perverse delight in sealing my letter in an envelope, sticking the stamp, writing the address and dropping the letter in the mailbox.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who likes to receive snail mail. I wished people did it more often. But in this day and age, e-mail makes us lazy to pick up a pen. Don’t be mistaken, I love e-mail. I think it’s one of the best things to be invented! E-mail is wonderful in getting quick and spontaneous messages across, and is a great way of keeping in touch with people.
There are however times where nothing can replace the tangibility of a handwritten card, postcard or letter. I am glad that some of my friends and I still keep up with the tradition of snail mail, albeit much less often than before e-mail came along.
So if you’re free, pick up that pen & paper!
