Recently I’ve been enamoured with these mocha buns (咖啡流沙包) from Maria’s Bakery. I mean, mocha oozing out of a bun as you bite into it, need I say more?

These little brown darlings are very popular so maybe just grab two or more while you’re at it. As a side note, if you are a fan of egg tarts (蛋撻) with shortcrust pastry, get those too as these yellow custardy delights are oh-so-buttery and melt-in-your-mouth.

To seal the mocha in, there is a mochi-like layer beneath the coffee-flavoured bread. The mochi layer also adds texture with its chewiness – smart thinking. As with most breads, this mocha bun is best eaten when warm. Savour the moment as the generous dollop of mocha oozes out as you bite into the bun; you might want to just slurp up that rich chocolate and coffee mix. It could get potentially messy if you don’t eat it right, so be careful with that white shirt. Don’t say you haven’t been warned.
