If you’re in Sydney during the end of October to early November, make sure you pay a visit to the outdoor sculpture exhibit, Sculpture by the Sea. Featuring 100 different sculptures that are placed along a scenic 2km route from Bondi Beach to Tamarama Beach, a visit makes for an excellent day out for a cultural experience as well as some sun and sea. The first exhibition was held in 1997 and has been an annual event ever since. Read its history here.

The walk starts from the right end of the beautiful Bondi Beach

A crocodile made from recycled materials

This sculpture featured a large rock wrapped in silver cloth

Notice the people snaking along the route to view the exhibits

These animals look like blow-up balloons but are really sculpted out of metal

An exhibit to increase awareness of the rubbish people leave behind at the beach

Giant paper boats run ashore

Red hot chilli enjoying a lay

A humour-piqued sculpture

The youngest sculptor in this year’s exhibition is this boy who cleverly made use of the natural terrain to come up with this playful sculpture that had these cute toy worms.

Everyone who walked past squealed in delight

These bamboo wind chimes were meant to commemorate the 202 people who died in the Bali bombings – most of them were Australian.

People having fun in this ‘tent’ made out of a colourful array of ribbons

If only one could trademark the magnificent ocean views that lie behind these words!

Even fishing rods arranged in the shape of a fan make for an exhibit

This colourful dome is made out of rolled-up T-shirts

Positive messages are found in the interior of the dome

Prettified bench
Sculpture by the Sea is my all-time favourite exhibition because I love its outdoor setting. Bringing art out of a gallery allows more people to enjoy these art works and makes it more accessible to the general public. The walk from Bondi Beach is so gorgeous with the sun, sea and the natural rock formations that are themselves a sight to behold. Plus after viewing the exhibition, you can head for a dip at the beach or pop into one of many cafes for a bite or a scoop of gelato like I did!
