I’ve come to notice that I’m the person who eats the most in the office. I seem to be munching on something every 2 hours or so, while no one seems to munch on anything. It’s disconcerting. Seriously, no one seems to need to drink or eat anything. I also seem to be the only one who heads to the water dispenser all the time. It might as well be shifted to my cubicle since I seem to be guzzling the whole damn thing.
Usually I’m eating fruits — some apple, banana, nectarine or pear etc. I think I fulfill my required daily fruit intake in the office. But recently I’ve also been rather indulgent. Yesterday i treated myself to a slice of my favourite carrot cake from Cedele Bakery. I mean, it’s not MY fault that they had to have a branch near my office!
Today, my colleague and I walked to Telok Ayer street for lunch. Fridays are the days to walk to eating spots farther away ‘cos the dresscode is casual and I can wear my comfy shoes instead of heels. Having said that, I’ve now become pretty adept at running in heels. I run for the trains and buses in them. Trust me, it is a skill. All women will attest to that.
So yeah, we went to Telok Ayer Street for lunch. I had Hakka Yong Tau Foo, which tasted ok. Not fantastic but passable. On the way back, my colleague and I came across a small hawker stall selling traditional Chinese pancakes. The warm pancake, about the size of a circle with a 15cm diameter, was folded into half with generous amounts of sweet red bean paste and crushed peanuts filling the trough that is formed once the pancake is folded. Who can possibly resist the traditional goodness of such snacks at only 60cents a piece? Certainly not me! :p
Then farther along the path, there was the famous “Smiling Orchid” bakery which is famous for its pineapple tarts, pastries and cakes. I ended up buying a slice of pandan chiffon cake while my colleague bought a slice of orange chiffon cake. I love pandan chiffon cake. It’s so light and fluffy, and the sweet, subtle smell of pandan is so heavenly. Its smell doesn’t hit you in the face. Rather, it draws you in, and seduces slowly but surely.
My philosophy is that there’s always room for dessert. So I returned to the office and started munching on my pancake straight after lunch. I left the pandan cake for later…to reward myself for a hard week’s work and to welcome myself into the weekend. 🙂
