My township tour guide who brought my friend and I around to see what a township was like. A township is the equivalent of a slum and I decided to go only because the people there receive some money for it. If not for that, I’d have said no to what I would consider poverty tourism.

Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens is a must-visit for any visitor to Cape Town. In summer there are evening concerts and locals flock there to enjoy some music and just relax on the soft grassy lawns with their picnic baskets overflowing with food. The gardens has a vast array of flowers that are native to the Cape flora kingdom.

A dassie we spotted at the top of Table Mountain. Believe it or not, its closest genealogical relative is the elephant!

A view of Table Mountain from Robben Island, an island which is so beautiful yet has such a sad history. Nelson Mandela was on this island for 20 out of the 27 years he was imprisoned. Best to book your tickets early if you are planning to visit the island.

Upon arriving by boat you will board a bus for a 45-minute around the island with commentary by a guide. At the end of the bus tour we were brought on a guided tour of the prison cells by a former political prisoner. We saw the cell that Mandela was in and once again admired the magnanimity and wisdom of a man who had so big a heart to forgive the people who did him wrong.

The Food Market at the V&A Waterfront is a smorgasbord of food. There’s Hungarian flat bread with stew chicken and rocket, vegan raw food, seafood paella, African meats like kudu and springbok etc.

The Watershed at the V&A Waterfront showcases independent fashion and accessories designers, potters, wood carvers, and other artisans. It’s the place to pick up a souvenir or two.

Enjoying my lay on this giant swing that can be found in The Company’s Gardens in the city centre. The Company Garden is a park which used to be where fruits and vegetables were grown for Dutch sailors to stock up on food supplies when they sailed through the Cape centuries ago.
