For what seems rather ridiculous to me since I consider myself quite an adventurous eater, I ate Poon Choi for the first time today in the almost five years I have been in Hong Kong. From Wu Kau Tang we hiked to Lai Chi Wo village for the Poon Choi that was being served at the village.
We had to order this traditional Hakka dish three days in advance. The one we had was filled with prawns, wood fungus, mushrooms, fish, dried oysters, pig’s skin, yam, radish, bean curd sheets, dried tofu, chicken feet, and lettuce. I enjoyed the spirit of communal eating and thought the Poon Choi was pretty tasty, except after awhile everything tasted similar. Nonetheless, an interesting eating experience and something to check off the Hong Kong to-eat list!
