A for Away

This month I’m taking on the Blogging A-Z challenge where I’m supposed to write a blog entry every day from Monday to Saturday in the month of April. So the idea is to blog thematically from A–Z on a topic beginning with the letter of the alphabet.

For today, A stands for Away.

I’ve been away from Singapore for five years now and have been thinking a lot about Singapore lately. Even more so last week during the week of national mourning over Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s passing. It’d have been great to have been able to be in Singapore last week to share that sad moment of history with Singaporeans. I read about Singaporeans specially flying home from Hong Kong and even the UK to pay their last respects. That’s quite something I have to say.

It’s a weird thing to say, but I think I love Singapore more when I’m away. I love many things about Singapore, except that it’s too small for me. Which unfortunately it’s not something that can be changed. Ideally I’d like to split my time among three cities that I would call home – Singapore, Hong Kong, and Sydney. If only I could spend four months in each city throughout the year! Then I wouldn’t get bored with any one city, and I would be able to catch up with friends that I have in these cities.

Will I return to Singapore? Maybe. I don’t know. All I can say for now is that I’m a proud Singaporean away from home.
