U for Unfriend

Every 5-6 months, I spring-clean my Facebook account. By that I mean going through my list of friends and unfriending ones that are people I hardly see or contact. I aim to have only a maximum of 300 people on my list. I think anything more than that is too many. And still out of this 300, I’m not even close to a quarter of them.

Anyway, this to me is a form of digital decluttering. It’s also a way of coping with status envy. Attaining nirvana I have not, so blocking out the perfect lives people present of themselves is my way of concentrating more on my inner self, free from the distractions of other people’s attainments. On my newsfeed I follow only close friends or people whom I think post interesting content. Or I follow the feeds of news sites such as The Straits Times.

And you know what? I have found that it is actually good to have less information. Most of the time, the people you have unfriended won’t even know you have done so. Hence it’s no love lost on both sides. So really, unfriending people isn’t as bad as it sounds.
