And the list continues…
7) Homecooked Barley Water — My grandauntie who used to be my nanny and my mum used to boil this a lot for my sister and me to drink ‘cos it’s supposed to be ‘cooling’ in nature. My mum still makes this once in awhile. But these days I usually get my barley water fix at Shenton House where I go to for lunch. I love eating the barley bits.
8) Water Chestnut water — Also something my grandauntie and mum used to make a lot when my sis and I were kids. It’s also supposed to be ‘cooling’ in nature. As with the barley, just dump the water chestnuts into water, add sugar and pandan leaves, and bring to boil.
9) Sugar Cane Water — My mum makes this by putting sugar canes into water to boil together with some rock sugar and pandan leaves. Also ‘cooling’ in nature, I had to drink litres of it when I had chickenpox when I was 14. It is supposed to drive the ‘heatiness’ away from the body.
10) Nine-layered Nonya Kueh — I love peeling the layers off and eating them one by one. It’s funny how some colour standard seems to have evolved with this dessert. The top layer is always red and the bottom always white. In between there’s pink, green, blue, yellow, and purple. I remember how I used to play with it as a kid. I would put one layer on my tongue and play with it as if it were my tongue. Haha.
11) Ang Ku Kueh — These red, oval-shaped desserts filled with green bean paste are so cute. The mold’s actually supposed to be like a turtle shell. Anyway, they taste great.
12) Sweet Potato Soup — I think this is like the poor man’s dessert but I love eating sweet potato. Boil it with rock sugar, pandan leaves and a few slices of ginger. The ginger is supposed to help dispell wind from the body.
13) Soya Beancurd — Known as DouHua in Mandarin and DaoFuFar in Cantonese.
14) Pandan Chiffon Cake — I wrote about this a while ago. This light, soft as sponge chiffon cake is great for tea time!
15) Pineapple tarts — Fattening but heck, I love them all the same. Incidentally, I’ve just chomped 4 down for breakfast. Sinful.
