I’ve been reading online about the Messy Bun (髒髒包) which is all the rage now in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore. For those who are still unaware, this is a croissant coated with a thick layer of chocolate, dusted with a copious amount of cocoa powder and stuffed with chocolate cream. Definitely not one for the calorie counter.
I chanced across the bun in a Chinese bakery in Chatswood last night and decided to buy one to try. It was a large bun – slightly bigger than the size of my hand – and looked rather intimidating to eat!
One bite into it and I totally got where its name came from – it’s just impossible to come away looking neat and clean after sinking your teeth into it. The cocoa powder and thick layer of chocolate on the layers of puff stick to your mouth and your fingers are a sticky, powdery mess.
I think the Messy Bun is definitely one for sharing. I ended up eating only half of it as the all that chocolate, pastry and chocolate cream got a bit too much. And I’m a chocolate fan, mind you! However, I’d still choose the traditional French pain au chocolat over the Messy Bun any time!
