A piping hot Tau Sar Piah (豆沙饼 – green bean paste pastry) is one of the best snacks to have, especially during teatime! One of the freshest Tau Sar Piahs you can get in town is from this bakery selling traditional Chinese pastries near Far East Square in the heart of the financial district.
Their Tau Sar Piahs are very popular and they are almost always freshly made ones. When you buy it, it’s usually still warm. There are two kinds–a sweet one (甜豆沙饼) and a salty one (咸豆沙饼). The latter isn’t exactly savoury. It’s just not as sweet as the former. Personally I prefer the sweet variety. Both look pretty much alike, and the one you see here is the sweet variety.

When eaten fresh, the pastry is so crisp and light. There’s nothing like sinking your teeth into it, and hearing that crunch as you bite into the layers of pastry. They sell for $5 for 10 Tau Sar Piahs. Do buy some and have a try if you’re in the vicinity!
