I became less of an IT dinosaur recently with the downloading of a few apps. For a smartphone user, my iPhone has very few apps compared to some of my friends. Ones I use a lot are Facebook, Whatsapp, iMoneyTrack and Words with Friends.
On my recent trip back to Singapore, a good friend got me started on Weibo, the Chinese counterpart to Twitter. I never got into Twitter but I decided to sign up for Weibo to make myself read more Chinese and keep up with my friend who likes to microblog there. Plus, I must admit, it’s quite entertaining to keep up with the Chinese celebrities’ ramblings. So if anyone of you out there are on Weibo, I go by the username of ‘dimsumdolly’.
Then another friend introduced me to the Overdrive app which allows users to download eBooks from libraries. The Singapore National Library eBook catalogue can be accessed through this app and I’m absolutely delighted as a whole new world of books has opened to me! Though the iPhone screen is a bit small, I can bear with it. What’s important is that I can now read so many English books. In Hong Kong, it’s hard to find English books that I want to read as their English catalogue is not as extensive. Best of all, I don’t have to go to the library physically to return books. I’m so happy!
While back in Singapore, I also learnt of the Meradio app which allows users to listen to radio broadcasts from Singapore radio stations. I’m a fan of only one radio station in Singapore and that’s Lush 99.5 for its cool music mix which features a mix of jazz, alternative rock, bossa nova, soft rock, smooth jazz, world music etc. As I listen to it, it makes me feel close to home.
Please let me know if you have any recommendations for cool or useful apps!
