Haven’t put up hiking pictures in awhile, so here are some taken on a hike to Ma On Shan (馬鞍山) last month. Ma On Shan is located in the New Territories and at 702m high, is the 10th highest peak in Hong Kong.

We were blessed with a beautiful day and were rewarded with views of Sha Tin town and the Tolo Harbour as we made our way from the Ma On Shan barbecue area. To get there, just take a taxi from Heng On MTR station (along the Ma On Shan line) and tell the driver you want to go to 馬鞍山燒烤場. Make your way up via the entrance to the family trail on the extreme left side of the barbecue area.

馬鞍 means “saddle” in Chinese and you can see why people in the old days called this mountain ridge Ma On Shan (literally translated as “Saddle Mountain”).

Along the way, you’ll see the rolling hills of Sai Kung in the distance. As you look down, the little pockets of white are the villages where people still reside.

Part of the trail along Ma On Shan is part of Stage 4 of the MacLehose Trail. When we got close to the MacLehose Trail, we came across this patch of long grass which made a very nice, soft bed for us to lie on.
Hiking along Ma On Shan is very scenic and it’s a trail I’ll definitely recommend!
