No one believes me when I tell them I’m a homebody. Yes, I do enjoy traipsing through mountains, climbing rocks, hopping across streams and jumping into the sea, but I like lazing around at home too. I like eating at home, cooking my own food and vegging out in front of my computer to watch mindless sitcoms.
When it comes to cooking for myself, I cook simple fare. I’m the queen of stir-fry as I like my food to cook fast. Roasting and baking are out of the question as I don’t have an oven and don’t intend to buy one. Steaming is another favourite method of mine as it’s healthy and easy. I love steamed broccoli and I like to have it with aglio olio dressing – which I prepare myself – if I’m having it with pasta.
I didn’t realise how idiot-proof it was to make aglio olio dressing until two months ago when a visiting friend who stayed with me taught me how to do it. I had never bothered to look up the recipe all these years. All it needs is a lot of mince garlic thrown into a pot, drown the garlic in olive oil and throw in a few bits of cut red chilli. Cook this over a low fire until the garlic turns golden brown. Then stir in your cooked pasta and steamed broccoli and you have a healthy and delicious meal! I also like making vermicelli or what I usually call mifen (米粉). I love cooking curry too as I need my curry fix every once in awhile when I miss the flavours of Southeast Asia. Ready-made curry pastes make a decent chef out of me.
But there are times when I come home and am too tired to cook, in which case I’ll just buy some cooked food from the supermarket. I wished Hong Kong had a website like this one in Singapore where you can order food from the restaurants listed on the website and have it delivered to your home. Hopefully they’ll have it in Hong Kong soon so I don’t always have to rely on those restaurants near my home whenever I’m feeling lazy! So yes, I do like hanging out at home and might even have some friends over for dinner in future!
