Whenever I travel I always love going to the local wet markets. It’s there where you really see how the locals live, the local produce, and the food they eat. The wet markets I came across in Phnom Penh were bustling with activity and filled with fresh supplies of fish and tropical fruits. There were even bugs, which were a tad too exotic for my palate.

Bananas grilled over charcoal are a popular street snack and I saw many carts like that around the city. Baguettes are also a legacy of the French who once occupied Cambodia.

The Central Market in Phnom Penh is a place catered to both tourists and locals alike. Tourists head for the stalls that sell souvenirs, T-shirts, and handicrafts. The locals head to the wet market and the part that sells kitchenware.

Lots of handicrafts to be found. Hammocks (all bunched up in the bottom of the picture above) are like national furniture – every household has at least one. I bought one for myself for US$3 in the hopes that one day I will find a place to use it!

No trip to Phnom Penh is complete without a trip to the Royal Palace. Only a small section is open to the public. People have also taken to writing their wishes on the leaves of the plants found in the palace grounds.
