The Facebook Expectation

There have been several times where some friends have said to me, “I put the photos up on Facebook, didn’t you see?”

Well er, no. I mean, since when was I obligated to read all your updates?? Some people seem to have such expectations of others. As if all their friends are supposed to read everything they have written. I don’t expect nor do I assume that my updates – which occur only once in a blue moon – are read by everyone on my ‘Friends’ list. Moreover, I think it’s better to update people about your life in a face-to-face meeting or a private conversation.

Some time last year I decided to unfollow most of my friends, and kept only a select few on my newsfeed. It’s mental and digital decluttering. Those friends I keep on my newsfeed are people I’m truly in touch with on a regular basis or those who post links to interesting articles. Other than that, I subscribe to the Facebook feed of two newspapers, The Straits Times and the South China Morning Post, to get news updates on the two cities that are dear to me.

Anyhow, I apologise in advance to friends who think I might have kept up with their lives through Facebook ‘cos most likely I haven’t!
