T for Transit

People say cities like Hong Kong and Singapore are transient places. I guess that’s true for those who aren’t locals in the cities; some have longer periods of transit than others. For many locals, though, they aren’t able to have that kind of mobility for various reasons. Or some just prefer to stay put.

But really, we’re always in some state of transit in life. With time, we transit from baby to teenager to adult. We transit in our life situations, e.g. girlfriend -> wife -> mother (though not always in this order in this day and age!). We transit in our careers. Our relationships with family and friends are constantly in transit. One minute you can be BFFs and the next you don’t keep in touch anymore.

For me, Hong Kong has always felt like a long transit. Sometimes, the feeling of being in transit can be unsettling. Especially so when I see all the friends I had gone to school having settled down with kids. I have technology and a knowledge-based economy to thank for the mobility and opportunities I’ve had.

Transitions are always kinda scary, whether it’s a new job, place, relationship etc. Adjustment is not always easy, but it can be exciting and challenging in a good way. It’s like your senses are on alert again because sights, scents and sounds are all new.

My next mini transit: Bhutan in June! Can’t wait!
