A few months ago I read the book “How to Fall in Love with Anyone” by Mandy Len Catron who had written this memoir as a follow-up to her famous New York Times article “To Fall in Love With Anyone, Do This. Contrary to what you might think, the memoir is not a guide to finding love. Rather it’s a series of essays of Catron’s own experiences of falling in and out of love, as well as her parents’ and grandparents’ story. At the same time, she muses about what she wants out of a long-term relationship.
In her New York Times article and her book, Catron talks about an experiment conducted by psychologist Arthur Aron at Stony Brook University. Pairs of people were given 36 questions (3 sets of 12) meant to spark intimacy between two strangers. At the end, the two strangers also had to sustain eye contact for four minutes. Catron tried the experiment with an acquaintance, and though it wasn’t instantaneous love, she and that guy did end up falling in love.
Anyhow, I thought I’d answer one question in each post as a way of getting to know myself and also for whoever is reading this blog to know me.
Q1. Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest?
I would like to invite not just one, but several people. I would like to have dinner with my parents and sister. It’s been awhile since we had dinner as a family; I haven’t been back in Singapore since October last year. But I’ll be back from end July to early September so I’m looking forward to spending time back home.
