the different morsels of the life of a foodie

Post-Covid

It took approximately a month for my body to be clear of Covid symptoms like having a dry cough and a sniffling nose. A’s symptoms were milder than mine and he recovered faster than I did.

Covid left me feeling lethargic and fatigued. For many days, I didn’t have the energy to step out of my home. The constant rain also made it an easy decision to stay indoors.

Eventually we started going on short walks to build up our strength again. It’s still not back to pre-Covid levels but it’s getting there!

Over the Easter long weekend, A and I went on a road trip, heading inland where we stayed a night in Cowra and Orange. The weather gods must have taken pity on people in New South Wales to have blessed us with fine weather for those four days.

Highlights of the trip:

The site of a WWII Prisoner of War camp in Cowra where Japanese and Italian PoWs were interned. The stone foundations of the buildings remain.
The post office (terracotta building) and the town hall (white building) of Forbes, both heritage buildings from the 1890s when Forbes was a gold mining town. Many of the country towns in New South Wales look similar in architectural design as they were built in the same era.
People go apple and plum picking in Orange during autumn. By the time we got there, all the figs had already been picked, which was a shame as I love figs! The region has many orchards and vine yards and is a great place to go for wine and fruit picking. In summer, cherries, nectarines and peaches can be picked at the farm we went to. Orange is a 3.5-hour drive from Sydney.
The next day, at Mount Irvine, which is closer to the Blue Mountains, we went chestnut picking. We managed to get the last of the harvest season, picking up what was left from the hordes of visitors that had come in the days before us. Nonetheless we both enjoyed the experience as it was the first time we had both picked chestnuts. Every time I see chestnuts, I’m reminded of the street vendors in Hong Kong who sell roasted chestnuts come autumn. I could never resist buying a bag for myself to munch on – you would smell the lovely aromas before you could spot the cart!

So that was the Easter weekend for us. Definitely gave us a much needed boost of sunshine and some time away from Sydney after the bout of Covid blues!
