the different morsels of the life of a foodie

Moussaka

I had moussaka for dinner tonight before going for class, and boy was it delicious! I bought it from the cafe that’s in my faculty’s building. An Italian family runs this cafe and they make really nice pasta. However they also serve the usual fare like sandwiches, wraps, cakes, and even Chinese food like stir-fried beef in oyster sauce with rice or Chinese noodles.
Oh on a side note, in Sydney, ‘beehoon’ as we know it in Singapore is known as Singapore Noodles. It annoys the hell out of the foodie in me, ‘cos in Singapore there’s no such thing as Singapore Noodles! I absolutely refuse to order it whenever I’m in Chinese eateries usually run by HongKongers. For lack of a better name, they pass off beehoon as “Singapore Noodles”.
But back to moussaka. It was the first time I tried it and I was really attracted to the look of it ‘cos it looked a lot like lasagne – lots of cheese baked to a nice golden brown colour, tomato and there were also layers of eggplant! I’m such a sucker for eggplant, so I had to give it a try.
The moussaka was delicious! The cheese wasn’t too rich, and there was enough of it to satisfy my craving. The ground beef (sometimes ground lamb is used instead), eggplant and thin slices of potato that were under those layers of cream cheese tasted so good! The olive oil that’s used in the preparation of the dish also added to the good taste.
Moussaka’s a Greek dish. One website I surfed by says it’s the shepherd’s pie of Greece. Another calls it an eggplant casserole. Anyway, now I’m hooked on this dish. Gotta get Joe my classmate, who’s just as nuts about eggplant as I am, to try it. 🙂
